Citation Pearl Growing WorldCat -- Competency 6

I searched WorldCat using Citation Pearl Growing. In searching a known item, I chose Carol Simpson (Simpson, Carol) and copyright, since for research I have done in another class I know she specializes in copyright and writes books and articles on the subject. I immediately found this record.

Successive Fractions LibLit -- Competency 6

I searched Library Literature using a Successive Fractions search. I typed in school libraries, narrowed that with Texas, and narrowed that with fundraising. I received 18 results, including the one screen captured in this image.

Specific Facet First ASC -- Competency 6

I searched Academic Search Complete using Specific Facet First. I first searched by fundrais*, thinking it would yield the least results. I received 6,058 results. So to test my thinking I deleted that and searched by school librar*, and found that I was correct, since I received 144,184 results in this way. I deleted that, and first typed in fundrais* and then school librar*. I received 18 results. Here is the capture of one I found on the subject of fundraising and Chicago school libraries.

Building Block Search ERIC -- Competency 6

I searched ERIC EBSCO Host using a Building Block Search. I truncated fund* for all funding and fundraising possibilities. I added school libra*, allowing the truncation for variations of library, libraries, and librarians. I then added strateg* for strategy or strategies. I found several useful articles. This is a capture of one I found to be useful.

School Library Media Activities Monthly

This website focuses on the collaboration between teachers and librarians with the goal of using the library to supplement the curriculum. It contains quite a few resources for the school librarian. Its contents include articles, ideas for curriculum/library integration, editorials, blogs, podcasts, and an author almanac. There is a soft copy edition subscription available as well.

I chose it because it appears very useful for school librarians.

I located it using Google and the keywords "school library."

Research Multimedia -- Competency 8

"Washington School Libraries Rally." American Libraries. Videoclip. 19 Feb 2008. http://alfocus.ala.org/videos/washington-school-libraries-rally.

I chose this clip because it addresses the mistaken perception of the school library as being "optional." Through a variety of speakers, including three moms in Washington State who took it upon themselves to fight the school district's decision to cut school librarian hours to save money, the essential need for the school library is advocated.

Image -- Competency 7

I chose this photo because it appears to be a young children's section of a library. I liked the mosaic or papier-mache "Read" sign across the shelves. One primary function of fundraising is to provide more materials and technology, and more for patrons to read. I liked this much better than many financial or event type pictures I found.

I chose "Fundraising for Nonprofits: How to Build a Community Partnership" by P. Burke Keegan. Unfortunately there were not a lot of choices that came up in the search when looking for fundraising especially in relation to a library. However, it seems information about non-profits in general may be modified or provide ideas for library usage. I chose this book from many others because it focuses on working with your community toward the goal of fundraising. In the context of the library, it is essential to understand the community both in choosing collections for the library, and soliciting financial support.

I chose this particular podcast because it is presented in the form of a straight-forward interview. Beth Wheeler Fox is a librarian at Westbank Public Library, experienced in many areas of fundraising. In this podcast, she explains its pros and cons, what is involved, and other ways for the library to save money, such as through the utilization of volunteers. Fox discusses community involvement, what makes a fundraiser successful, management of the events, and fundraising on a budget.

This podcast could have come from any geographic area in the United States and have been relevant. I thought the fact that it is a product of the Central Texas Library System in Austin was helpful.

I located this podcast through Google in the Internet Explorer toolbar. I tried a search using the other search engines listed, but did not find very many as on topic as this one.

ProLiteracy accepting applications for Charles Evans Book FundDeadline: January 23, 2009ProLiteracy, an organization that focuses on adult literacy and basic education programs, is accepting applications for The Charles Evans Book Fund. The Charles Evans Book Fund targets nonprofits that provide adult literacy and/or basic education services for people who are homeless. The grants, awarded in the form of vouchers for teaching materials and products from ProLiteracy's publishing division, range from $3,000 to $8,000. Blog Purpose -- Competency 1

Funding, Fundraising, and School Libraries

As with any institution, libraries require funds to thrive, even simply to survive. My intent for this blog is to examine the challenges to libraries when lack of funding is a problem. I wish to examine how fundraising and volunteer opportunities might be created to boost the funds of libraries, especially school libraries, and how community partnerships are essential to the fundraising endeavor. Although my focus and career choice is school librarianship, there is some carry over to a public library setting.

I am pursuing a School Librarian Certificate with my Master's degree in Library and Information Studies. There are many issues in school librarianship I could have pursued with this blog. However, in this case I would like to focus on funding as an issue of how communities and school libraries might join in a collaborative, mutually beneficial effort in funding the library.
